Markets in Europe, Asia end 2011 down but US up (AP)

LONDON ? Stock markets around the world were closing out 2011 on a subdued note Friday, with many of the world's major indexes posting big declines for the year in the wake of Europe's debt crisis, a faltering U.S. economy and signs that China's economy is no longer sizzling.

Markets have also been rocked by natural disasters, trading scandals, political upheavals, sharp fluctuations in commodity prices, and the up-and-down price of oil amid the turmoil in the Arab world.

In Europe, the trading backdrop has been particularly grim, with many of the main markets poised to post their worst year since 2008. That's perhaps unsurprising given that most of the attention of the financial world has centered on the debt crisis, which has already seen three relatively small countries bailed out and is threatening much-bigger Italy.

Trading in Europe on Friday was fairly quiet with many traders using the opportunity to close out their books for the year. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 0.2 percent at 5,556, while Germany's rose 0.3 percent at 5,868. The CAC-40 in France was 0.3 percent higher at 3,136.

With policymakers failing to convince markets that they can deal with the crisis and the eurozone widely-predicted to slip back into recession next year, the euro is ending 2011 softly around the $1.2934 mark after falling to a 15-month low against the dollar on Thursday at $1.2857. The euro started the year at $1.3345.

Wall Street was expecting a flat opening. As things stand, U.S. markets are going to record modest gains for the year, largely on the back of a year-end run following stronger than anticipated U.S. economic data.

Though the performance of the U.S. economy has played second fiddle to Europe for much of the year, it has the potential for shoring up confidence in 2012 if the recent positive news continues.

"Crystal ball-gazing can begin in earnest over the weekend but I am tempted to conclude ? more of the same in Europe, easier policy in China, and further asset reflation in the U.S., which finally gets life back into the housing market and thereby drives optimism about the 2013 economic outlook," said Sebastien Galy, an analyst at Societe Generale.

Asian markets have already closed out the year and most markets had a year to forget. Japan's Nikkei 225 index, after three straight days of losses, managed to eke out a 0.4 percent rise Friday to end the year at 8,429.45. However, that was its lowest closing since 1982.

Meanwhile, China's benchmark gained 1.2 percent to close at 2,199.42 ? still, a 21 percent loss for the year as the impact of Beijing's multibillion-dollar stimulus faded and the government tightened curbs on lending and investment to cool blistering economic growth.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gained 0.2 percent to close at 18,434.39 ? a precipitous slide of 19.7 percent from a year ago. Singapore's Straits Times Index closed down 1 percent at 2,646.35 ? a 17.5 percent dive.

Australia's benchmark S&P ASX 200 ended the year at 4,140.4 ? down 0.4 percent on the day and 14.5 percent lower for 2011. A day earlier, South Korea's benchmark Kospi closed at 1,825.74 on Thursday ? 11 percent down on its last trading session of the year Thursday.

Oil prices meanwhile were poised to close out the year around the $100 a barrel mark ? benchmark crude for February delivery was up 30 cents at $99.95 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The 10 Best Bay Area Thrift Stores

SF Weekly:

Here in San Francisco, we're connoisseurs of thrift culture. We can neatly identify an article of clothing as thrift, vintage, upcycled, or used (and can admittedly get a little snotty if someone isn't keeping up with our lingo). Whether you're new to thrifting or a veteran, there's always more to discover here. Every neighborhood is peppered with its own array of stores, some with citywide reputations and some that are well-kept secrets.

Below you'll find my highly partisan list of favorites. Most of them are in San Francisco but two require a little travel. Hopefully you'll be introduced to a few new spots.

Pippa Middleton "Undateable," According to Tabloid

NOTE: The answer to the question posed on the image below is not her dress.

For whatever reason, according to Life & Style, men just sprint away from Pippa Middleton, and the younger sister of Duchess Catherine wonders why!

After attending her seventh wedding of the year this month, the 28-year-old is starting to wonder if she'll ever be the one standing at the altar, sources say.

Pippa Middleton Tabloid Cover

"She's scared she'll never find someone who'll accept her life," a friend says.

"[Pippa Middleton] is happy for Kate and for her university friends who are getting hitched, but she's starting to wonder if she'll ever find her Prince Charming."

In November, after growing increasingly uncomfortable with her fame, longtime boyfriend Alex Loudon called it quits with Pippa for the second time this year.

Ever since the split, according to the friend, Pippa has been deeply worried that she has become undateble, now that she's the sister-in-law of Kate Middleton.

"The men Pippa knows are all majorly turned off by the circus surrounding her," an insider reveals, with some publications dubbing it the "Pippa Problem."

Call us crazy, but we imagine there are plenty of guys who would love to have a Pippa problem on their hands. The issue is that she's quasi-famous? Deal.

Obama hits popular snorkeling spot during vacation (AP)

HONOLULU ? President Barack Obama and his family spent a warm and sunny afternoon at one of the most popular snorkeling spots on the island of Oahu, where they released four green sea turtles into the water.

The Obamas arrived at Hanauma Bay Park on Tuesday after a scenic, 40-minute drive from their multimillion-dollar rented vacation home on Kailua Beach. The park is a favorite destination for the Obamas, who make an annual trip there during their Christmas holiday in Hawaii ? always on Tuesdays, when the park is closed to the public for maintenance.

This year, the president and his family released four green sea turtles into the bay's clear blue water. The 18-month-old turtles were born at Sea Life Park, a nearby marine sanctuary and aquarium that boasts of being the only place in the U.S. that raises green sea turtles in captivity.

The president and his daughters, Malia and Sasha, enjoyed their turtle experience so much that they decided to make a stop at Sea Life Park later in the day. The president appeared briefly before cameras as he left the park, climbed into a waiting SUV and headed back to his vacation rental.

The president has stayed largely out of the spotlight since arriving Friday evening in Hawaii, the state where he was born and mostly raised. He spent a low-key holiday with his family, attended Christmas church services and visited service members stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, near Honolulu.

Obama also has hit the golf course, worked out at the gym on the Marine base and taken wife Michelle Obama out to dinner.

Behind the scenes, the president is being briefed by a small cadre of traveling staff on domestic and international developments, including his administration's debate over whether to allow Yemen's outgoing leader to come to the U.S. for medical treatment. Obama also announced two nominees to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors on Tuesday.

Obama has no public events planned during his vacation, which is expected to last until shortly after New Year's Day.

Spiders' sexual cannibalism is for offspring

The unkind act of butchering and eating your mate after sex, typified by the female black-widow spider and praying mantis, may make for healthier babies, new research suggests.

The researchers found that a male orb-web spider makes the ultimate evolutionary sacrifice: giving his life for the health of his offspring.

    1. Was Shroud created in a flash? Claims rise again

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Italian researchers resurrect the idea that the Shroud of Turin's mysterious image could only have been created by a powerful flash ? but skeptics still aren't buying it.

    2. Who's afraid of a 13-foot-tall walking robot?
    3. Ancient green grocer target of fiery curse
    4. You do the math ? because that pigeon can

Sexual cannibalism is the act of one partner eating the other after sex. In the orb-web spider Argiope bruennichi, the female tries to grab and wrap up the male at the onset of mating so she can snack on him during sex. In the lab, only about 30 percent of the males survive their first mating, but by letting the female gnaw on them, the males prolong the sex act, making it more likely they will inseminate their partner.

Of these survivors, half go on to find a second mate, while the others try again for the same female. Due to the male's anatomy, two copulations is the limit. (When you are facing a life without sex, is it really worth it to go on?)

"Two main hypotheses explain the evolution of sexual cannibalism," study researcher Klaas Welke, of the University of Hamburg in Germany, told LiveScience in an email. The males might be offering themselves up "to gain access to mating opportunities and to prolong their mating duration." Or, Welke said, it could be a "paternal investment into their own offspring, and they provide females with nutrients."

In the case of the orb-web spider, males tend to be much smaller than their mates ; in this species, they're only one-tenth as heavy, and researchers weren't sure how much nutritional benefit the females can gain from such pipsqueak partners.

To see if eating their mates gave female spiders a nutritional advantage, the researchers divided the female orb-web spiders of their laboratory collection into three groups, allowing them to mate with one, two or three males. Half of each group of females also was allowed to eat their mates, while in the other instances, the researchers reached in and saved the male from his partner's clutches.

They then analyzed each female's eggs and resulting offspring. They counted and weighed the eggs and monitored how many offspring survived simulated cold-weather scenarios ? about 46 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius) ? and a 20-week stint of starvation.

The researchers thought that perhaps the nutritional bonus from multiple mates and meals would have an impact on females. It didn't. "We were surprised, because we had expected that any effect of male consumption would increase with every additional male consumed," Welke said.

What they did see, however, was that any cannibalism led to healthier offspring that survived better and had bigger eggs.

"Our findings suggest a paternal investment of males into their offspring," Welke said. "Sexual cannibalism may increase male reproductive success and may be very beneficial in a species with a high paternity insurance and a low rate of polyandry as found in Argiope bruennichi."

The study is published in the January 2012 issue of the journal Animal Behaviour.

Civil union couples spread throughout central Illinois

All but one county in the Springfield area has issued civil union licenses since the law creating civil unions in Illinois went into effect June 1.

The sole exception is Cass County west of Springfield.

More than 150 civil union licenses have been issued in the other counties, mostly to same-sex couples but with a smattering also issued to opposite-sex couples. Illinois law allows both same-sex and opposite-sex couples to enter civil unions.

They are among the more than 3,700 civil union licenses issued around the state in the opening months of the law.? The statewide numbers were compiled by Equality Illinois, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group.

?In the first six months of civil unions becoming available, thousands of couples rushed out and got their civil union licenses,? said Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of Equality Illinois.? ?It says just how urgent the need for these benefits protections has been.? Many of these couples have been together for many, many years and have been denied these benefits and protections.?

?

Not just Chicago

Equality Illinois contacted all 102 counties to determine how many civil union licenses had been issued through the end of November.? The organization found 3,729 civil union licenses had been issued.? Ninety counties reported issuing at least one.

?The fact that 90 counties already have civil union couples in them is significant,? Cherkasov said.? ?That means people who need civil unions, same-sex couples particularly, are in every part of the state.? They?re not just in Chicago.? They live in every city and town.?

Even those counties that didn?t report issuing any licenses might have civil union couples living in them, Cherkasov said.

?They may have gotten married in Iowa or Massachusetts or in Canada, and their marriage is already recognized in Illinois as a civil union,? he said.

Cass County Clerk Michael Kirchner could not be reached for additional comment.

In similarly small Menard County, though, three licenses have been issued.

?That?s probably in the ballpark where I figured it,? said County Clerk Gene Treseler.? ?We?re a small county, so we weren?t expecting too many.?

That?s also the number issued in much larger Macoupin County.? Ann Easton of the Macoupin County clerk?s office said one license was issued to a male couple, one to a female couple and one to a heterosexual couple.

?

106 in Sangamon

Among Springfield-area counties, Sangamon County has issued the largest number of civil union licenses by far.? County Clerk Joe Aiello said the county had issued 106 licenses as of last week.? By comparison, the office has issued 728 marriage licenses since June 1.

Aiello said the number of civil union licenses could pick up over the next few days.

?I could see some people wanting to have a ceremony New Year?s Eve or New Year?s Day,? he said.? ?I wouldn?t be surprised if we see a little increase over the next week.?

Of the 106 civil union licenses issued so far by his office, Aiello said, 34 were issued to male couples and 68 to female couples.? The other four were issued to heterosexual couples.

?It was rather busy at first, that first day, first week,? Aiello said.? ?It?s kind of tapered off.? It?s been rather steady since then.?

Morgan County Clerk Jill Waggener said her office has issued 16 civil union licenses.? Two that she knows of went to heterosexual couples.

?Why they didn?t want a marriage license, I don?t know,? she said.

Like other county clerks, Waggener said there have been no problems administering the new law.

?It?s a normal everyday routine, just like issuing marriage licenses,? she said.

?Our entire system and procedures and software that pertains to marriage licenses easily transferred to civil unions,? said Montgomery County Clerk Sandy Leitheiser.? Montgomery County has issued eight licenses.

Christian County Clerk Linda Curtin said seven civil union licenses have been issued so far.

?We had a few at the beginning, and then we get one every once in a while,? Curtin said.? ?It?s been slow compared to some counties.?

Logan County has issued nine civil union licenses, said County Clerk Sally Litterly.

?I?m not surprised, because I really didn?t know what to anticipate,? she said.

Rep. Greg Harris, D-Chicago, an openly gay member of the General Assembly, said many Illinois couples might have gone to other states that legalized gay marriage or civil unions before Illinois.

?I would guess that there are thousands of people who didn?t go through the paperwork here who are also now legally recognized,? he said.

For a while, he said, there was a ?spate? of instances where civil union couples reported cases of people not complying with the law. Mostly, he said, it was a case of people simply being unfamiliar with the requirements.

?They?re trying to figure out to whom the law applies and how they need to apply it,? Harris said.? ?Most people have figured it out and adjusted their policies and moved on.?

Cherkasov said Equality Illinois has launched a civil union tracker to help couples ensure they are being treated fairly under the law. Information about the civil union law and the protections it provides are available on the organization?s website, equi.org.

No push this year for gay marriage

Harris said he?s pleased with the results of the law.

?I just could not be happier,? he said.? ?I?m getting emails from folks all around the state thanking us for getting this done.?

Harris said his ultimate goal remains legalization of gay marriage, but that might have to wait.

?The whole legislature is up for election this time. Everyone has a new district,? Harris said.? ?The state?s in financial turmoil.? I?m not sure that, for a variety of reasons, there are a lot of issues that you would probably not want to call for a vote right now.?

Instead, Harris said, he will be vigilant against efforts to weaken the law.

The Illinois Family Institute wants to see lawmakers adopt at least one change ? legislation that would essentially put organizations like Catholic Charities back in the foster care/adoption business.? The state refused to renew contracts with Catholic Charities because it would not place children in homes of unmarried couples, including those in civil unions.

?We?re backing legislation to try to address the unmitigated disaster that has befallen the religious adoption agencies and foster care agencies in the state of Illinois,? said David Smith, executive director of the institute.

Joint tax returns required

Couples in civil unions must file joint tax returns with the state Department of Revenue, a reversal of an earlier position taken by the department.

The department initially said couples in civil unions had to file individually because federal law does not allow them file as married couples.? After looking at the way New York handled filings by couples in same-sex marriages, the Illinois department revised its procedures.

Revenue spokeswoman Sue Hofer said the change won?t provide a financial benefit to civil union couples because of Illinois? flat rate system.

?What could impact your tax bill are credits you get in Illinois -- for instance your property tax credit, your education credit if you send your kids to school,? Hofer said.? ?Those, it?s easier if you combine them into one return.?

The downside for civil union couples is they have to file additional paperwork and they have to do it manually. Couples must complete a federal return as if they were married, including all federal schedules that apply to that status and submit it along with the state tax return.?

Civil union couples can file either married-filing-jointly or married-filing-separately state returns, according to the department web site.

?We?re providing civil union couples as best we can the same rights and responsibilities of married couples,? Hofer said.

More information about filing taxes can be found at the Department of Revenue?s website: http://www.revenue.state.il.us/Individuals/Same-Sex-Civil-Unions.htm

NM woman gives birth in truck during snowstorm

Russell delivered Johanna on the side of the road while trying to rush Elizabeth to the Santa Fe hospital during a snowstorm Tuesday morning. (AP Photo/Albuquerque Journal, Eddie Moore)

(AP) ? Russell LeFevre learned how to birth a baby in nursing school using clamps, blankets, a suction bulb that clears a baby's mouth of mucus and other medical supplies.

When his wife's water broke in the front seat of a truck as it sped down an icy New Mexico highway in a snowstorm Tuesday, LeFevre just had his hands, some jackets and shoelaces.

It was enough.

His wife, Elizabeth, gave birth to a 6-pound, 11-ounce baby girl inside the truck on Old Las Vegas Highway between Canoncito and Santa Fe, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported (http://bit.ly/rRMAgp). The family is well enough to go home to Canoncito on Wednesday.

Elizabeth LeFevre said she started having contractions around midnight Tuesday. The pains intensified enough that by 2 a.m., LeFevre, her husband Russell and their 3-year-old daughter loaded into a truck driven by her brother-in-law and headed for the hospital. They took the highway because Interstate 25 was shut down amid blizzard conditions.

"We got like two miles down the highway, and I told him there was probably no chance we were going to make it to the hospital," Elizabeth LeFevre said. "As soon as I said that, my water broke."

Russell LeFevre said that when he checked his wife after her water broke, the baby was already halfway out. The other half of the baby came out in minutes.

"I turned her (the baby) to the side and gave her a little back slap, and she coughed up some goop, and I wrapped her up in a jacket," he said.

He also put the placenta in a jacket.

Russell LeFevre works as a nurse's assistant at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe and had just graduated from nursing school Dec. 8, so he had some training.

"(But) in the moment I was totally unprepared to deliver a baby in my truck," he said. "I had shoelaces instead of clamps, and I was wiping out her mouth with my finger instead of a suction bulb. It was pretty wild."

During the birth, Russell LeFevre's brother Neil was on the phone with an emergency dispatch operator, who had been talking the family through the birth. The operator advised them to tie off the baby's umbilical cord with a shoelace.

After the baby was born, the family headed for a fire station near Eldorado, but no one answered when they banged on the door. They then approached a state police officer who gave them blankets and called an ambulance to take them to Christus St. Vincent.

The pair named the baby Joanna Mallory LeFevre.

Russell LeFevre said his 3-year-old daughter, Renee, was "so good" during the whole ordeal and tried to comfort his wife through her labor pains by patting her on the head and telling her, "It's going to be OK."

"It was amazing," Russell LeFevre said. "We got her into the ambulance and the paramedic said we did a great job. The baby was healthy and pink and crying."

Boy's chimney designed with Santa in mind (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A worried letter from six-year old Leo Park sparked a mammoth operation to test what is believed to be the world's first chimney specifically designed to accommodate Santa Claus.

The little boy's parents are having a house custom built and when Leo viewed the plans he was concerned that the chimney wasn't big enough for Father Christmas and his famous belly that shakes when he laughs like a bowl full of jelly.

As he was penning his traditional letter to Santa, Leo decided to also write a heartfelt missive about the chimney design problem to Jeremy Paxton, who owns the estate on which the new house is being built.

In childish scrawl the letter reads: "Dear Mr Paxton, I am worried that my mummy's house does not have a big enough chimney. I think Santa Claus will get stuck. Please can you help. Love Leo Park."

Paxton, founder and owner of luxury holiday home development Lower Mill Estate in the Cotswolds decided to commission a special formula to satisfy Leo's concerns.

Obviously size was the key consideration to ensure Santa won't get wedged tight on his way to stuffing the stockings and so Paxton enlisted a mathematician to take on the challenge and save the jolly old elf from turning red for the wrong reasons.

The Santa-friendly formula looked at risk factors of chimney entry, the size of St Nick's girth versus the width of the chimney at its narrowest point.

To test what they said was the perfect chimney, Paxton enlisted the help of a stand-in Santa Claus in full padded outfit, a crane, a harness and winch to put the new chimney through its paces.

Leo was invited to watch as the great experiment got underway.

"Go on Santa" he shouted out as the faux Father Christmas was lifted into the air towards the chimney.

A few seconds later and Santa was successfully lowered into the chimney of the half-built house, re-emerging shortly after to deliver a hearty: "Ho Ho Ho."

"I can guarantee that this chimney is big enough for Santa and all the presents," he told Leo.

An excited Leo gave a thumbs up to the St. Nicholas impersonator and rushed to hug him.

"I'm absolutely delighted not just that Santa fitted into the chimney, but that that little boy, Leo, said to me: 'That was the best day of my life' which made the whole thing worthwhile," said Paxton.

The Park family won't be able to inhabit their new holiday home until next December, just in time to get the milk and biscuits ready for their very special Yuletide visitor.

Microsoft Founder's Rocket Plane Hybrid: One Giant Leap For Mankind (Mashable)

If you build it, they will come. That may be something of a cliche these days, but it retains an essential nugget of business sense: you need the infrastructure before you can find the big revenue models.

[More from Mashable: NASA?s Voyager 1 to Go Where No Spacecraft Has Gone Before]

Nowhere is that more true than in the fledgling private space industry. Entrepreneurs have plenty of promising ideas for what we can do in Earth orbit and beyond, but no consensus on how we're going to get there.

Tuesday's announcement from Microsoft co-founder (and somewhat reclusive billionaire) Paul Allen could change all of that.

[More from Mashable: No Hope for the Russian Space Probe]

Allen is starting a $200 million company, Stratolaunch Systems, that will marry the designs of two of the space industry's most important inventors: Burt Rutan and Elon Musk.

Behold, the hybrid rocket plane -- due this decade, larger than any aerial vehicle yet built, it can put anything and anyone in orbit.

Rutan is the creator of SpaceShipOne, the world's first commercial spacecraft, which was launched from the top of a light aircraft called White Knight. The plane took care of those crucial first 30,000 feet of a launch, where Earth's hold on us is hardest to break. This is how Virgin Galactic will be sending its first tourists to space in 2013.

Musk, the former PayPal billionaire, owns a company called SpaceX, which is building a new breed of rocket called the Falcon in order to deliver commercial payloads like satellites.

So why not have a Falcon rocket launching off the back of a White Knight plane? That, essentially, is Paul Allen's plan. There's a little more to it than that; Rutan is creating a giant and far more expensive version of the White Knight, using six engines from Boeing 747s. The wingspan will be 385 feet, wider than that of the previous record holder, Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose.

What Allen has done, wisely, is to take two already proven systems and fuse them together. To build even more confidence, he has hired NASA veterans such as the agency's former administrator, Mike Griffin, to sit on the Stratolaunch board.

So what will this setup actually launch into space? In a word: everything. Commercial payloads, tourists, satellites, space hotels, International Space Station guests, maybe even unmanned missions to other planets.

Given that the only entity that can currently launch all of that for you is the Russian Space Agency -- which charges more than $60 million per passenger -- Allen thinks the industry is wide open to competition. At Tuesday's press conference, he spoke of bringing "airport-like operations to the launch of commercial and government payloads.? The company's motto is "any orbit, any time."

Sure, it'll be a while before you can hop onto an affordable orbital flight; Stratolaunch has tentatively pointed to 2016 as its first year of operation, and the first clients are likely to be deep-pocketed telecoms companies and governments.

But the system seems powerful, light and easily scaled -- a magical recipe for entrepreneurship. It also doesn't hurt to have the resources of one of the world's wealthiest men. Slowly but surely, it's companies like this that will move the needle on the cost of getting ordinary people, everyday things, and all-important infrastructure to space.

"I have long dreamed about taking the next big step in private space flight after the success of SpaceShipOne ? to offer a flexible, orbital space delivery system," Allen said in a statement. "We are at the dawn of radical change in the space launch industry."

As Wordsworth might say: bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, but to be young made it very likely you could eventually get a cheap ticket to the heavens.

Liz Taylor couture soars to $2.6 million at auction (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) One of actress Elizabeth Taylor's Dior evening gowns sold for $362,500, boosting the total for the auction of her haute couture to $2.6 million at Christie's.

The silver encrusted brocade gown from 1968, with matching bag, had been estimated at about $5,000, but a protracted bidding war among several determined would-be buyers drove the price to about 70 times that, including commission.

The Wednesday sale, the third in a weeks' worth of auctions of Taylor's storied jewels, clothes, memorabilia and other items, was not marked by the freewheeling frenzy that prevailed on Tuesday, when her finest jewelry took in $116 million.

But the $2.6 million was still about 10 times the pre-sale estimate, owing to the Taylor cachet and also driven by competitive online bidding from around the globe.

Christie's said the sale set a record for a couture auction, although the evening's top lot was actually an Andy Warhol lithograph of Taylor which fetched $662,500.

"The couture was an extremely successful auction," said Andrea Fiuczynski, president of Christie's Los Angeles, who served as auctioneer.

The results, she said, were a testament to Taylor's iconic status, which she said is unmatched today.

"There isn't any celebrity now who does everything she did," Fiuczynski told Reuters, speaking to Taylor's work as an actress, activist, humanitarian, savvy businesswoman and style icon.

Taylor died of congestive heart failure in March at age 79.

Two other offerings soared past $100,000 - a Chanel ball gown and cape with shoes and matching bag, which fetched $134,500; and a Versace beaded bolero jacket emblazoned with images of Taylor in her film roles, which sold for $128,500.

A few pieces of jewelry included in the sale also commanded strong prices, notably a fish charm necklace estimated at $500 which sold for $30,000 and a pair of rock crystal and gold Gucci ear pendants, which went for $74,500 against an estimate of $1,500.

The Taylor auctions continue on Thursday with a memorabilia and fine arts sale. Online auctions of some 1,000 lower-priced items from Taylor's estate are running concurrently.

(AP) ? FIFA says former president Joao Havelange has resigned as a member of the International Olympic Committee.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that he had resigned days before he faced possible suspension. The 95-year-old Brazilian official was the Olympic body's longest-standing member. The IOC was preparing to rule on claims he took kickback payments while he was the FIFA president from 1974-98.

FIFA says in a statement to the AP it has "taken note" of Havelange's resignation, and "the fact that the IOC has closed the case accordingly."

FIFA says it "cannot speculate on any decisions made by Mr. Havelange" regarding his status as honorary president. The FIFA congress appointed him to the position in 1998.

Wichita State hands No. 18 UNLV 1st loss (AP)

WICHITA, Kan. ? UNLV coach Dave Rice can remember the scouting report on Wichita State's Joe Ragland quite clearly.

"Catch and shoot guy," Rice said. "You have to close out on him."

The 18th-ranked Runnin' Rebels know that all too well now.

Ragland had eight 3-pointers ? one off the school record ? and finished with 31 points to lead the Shockers to an 89-70 victory on Sunday.

UNLV (8-1) is undefeated no more.

"The credit all goes to Wichita State," Rice said. "They got anything and everything they wanted. They executed really, really well."

Ragland entered the game with five 3-pointers this season. He went 8 of 9 from beyond the arc for the Shockers (5-2).

"Once I made the first couple," Ragland said, "I figured I would keep shooting whenever I was open."

That plan worked well for Wichita State, which led by 15 points at halftime and were never threatened after that.

Carl Hall scored 17 points and Garrett Stutz added 13 for Wichita State.

Chace Stanbeck led UNLV, which handed then-No. 1 North Carolina its first loss of the season on Nov. 26, with 16 points while Mike Moser added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Rice said his team's inability to make defensive stops was the key.

"The credit all goes to Wichita State," Rice said. "They got anything and everything they wanted. They executed really, really well."

It was 18-all when a 3 by Ragland ? the Shockers' fifth in the game's first 10 minutes ? started a 9-0 run.

UNLV went nearly 8 minutes without a field goal.

"Our game plan was to keep them from penetrating the middle," Shockers guard Toure Murry said, "and then just play from there."

That allowed the Shockers to stretch the lead behind Ragland. He made three more 3-pointers in half's final 6 minutes, hitting all five first-half 3-pointers he attempted. His 19 first-half points were as many as UNLV's top three scorers combined.

"Our guys were beating them (off the dribble), and they had to help," Ragland said. "That kept leaving me wide open."

The Shockers were 8 of 14 on 3-pointers in the half in building a 47-32 lead.

UNLV started finding its offensive stride after halftime, scoring 14 points in the first 5 1-2 minutes. But it could still never get the lead under 14.

A big reason was Wichita State's inside duo of Hall and Stutz, who combined for 19 points in the second half.

"We could not get a stop," Rice said. "From a learning standpoint, we need to understand that part of being 8-0 and being ranked is you're going to get everyone's best shot. And we certainly got that today."

Not surprisingly, it was Ragland who keyed the Shockers' final surge.

He calmly swished a kick-out 3-pointer, forcing a UNLV timeout with Wichita State leading 67-48. He finished 8 of 9 from the arc.

Then, 33 seconds later, Murry slammed a rebound for a 69-48 lead with 9:37 remaining, sending a sellout crowd into a frenzy.

UNLV would not get closer than 16 points after that.

"They played with more energy, came out harder," Moser said. "It was a real big game for them, and they took advantage of it."

UNLV was 5 of 20 from 3-point range and were outrebounded 28-26 after entering the game with a 6.2-rebound advantage per game. Wichita State had 20 assists on 32 field goals.

It was more than Shockers coach Gregg Marshall had even hoped.

"UNLV is an NCAA tournament team," Marshall said. "They've got the resume. I feel if we're consistent in that type of effort, we can be in the NCAA tournament as well."

GOP rivals hope to court Cain supporters (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A day after Herman Cain shuttered his Republican candidacy for president, struggling GOP hopefuls looked to pick up the fallen candidate's tea party following and upset a primary dynamic that has pushed Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to the forefront.

Gingrich's campaign, ramping up its operations in early nominating states, was meeting with former Cain aides and advisers now looking for jobs. While Cain's endorsement remained up for grabs, Gingrich and his rivals were looking to schedule one-on-one meetings this week with the former pizza executive.

Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said Sunday they expected Cain supporters would fall in line behind them because of their messages on limited government, despite their low standing in the polls. Meanwhile, last-place rival Rick Santorum predicted he now had a good chance of winning the Iowa caucus.

While such brazen predictions are probably overstated, the 11th-hour press comes at a crucial time and could upset an already volatile race for the GOP endorsement. A month before the first vote is cast in the Iowa caucus and five weeks before the New Hampshire primary, most GOP candidates were looking to a week of heavy campaigning in Iowa ahead of the next debate, scheduled for Saturday. The stakes are possibly the highest for Mitt Romney, who could be hurt the worst if Cain supporters rally behind Gingrich.

"A lot of Herman Cain supporters have been calling our office and they've been coming over to our side," said Bachmann. "They saw Herman Cain as an outsider and I think they see that my voice would be the one that would be most reflective of his."

Likewise, Paul said he was optimistic that Cain's departure would reinvigorate his campaign.

"We're paying a lot of attention to that, because obviously they're going to go somewhere in the next week or so," Paul said of Cain's supporters.

Santorum predicted that his campaign would pick up steam in coming days.

"We have a very strong, consistent conservative message that matches up better with Iowans than anybody else. And we think we're going to surprise a lot of people," he said.

Once surging in the polls, Cain dropped out of the race Saturday after battling allegations of sexual harassment and a claim that he had a 13-year extramarital affair. The Georgia businessman has denied the accusations.

Gingrich, the former House speaker from Georgia, has so far been the biggest beneficiary of Cain's slide. A Des Moines Register poll conducted Nov. 27-30 and released late Saturday found the former House speaker leading the GOP field with 25 percent support, ahead of Paul at 18 percent and Romney at 16.

A separate NBC News/Marist poll showed Gingrich beating Romney, 26 percent to 18 percent, among Republican caucus attendees in Iowa.

Gingrich also is enjoying national popularity that could give him the momentum he needs to overcome deficiencies in the organization of his campaign. At the same time, Gingrich says he knows his surge in the polls could disappear if his opponents stage a comeback.

"I'm not going to say that any of my friends can't suddenly surprise us," Gingrich said at a recent town hall meeting in New York sponsored by tea party supporters.

Meanwhile, Romney is running strong in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary on Jan. 10. Romney is also seen by most conservatives at this point as having the greatest chance of defeating President Barack Obama next year.

But Romney continues to be viewed with suspicion by many conservatives who say he has changed his stance on such critical issues as abortion and health care. Santorum acknowledged Sunday that Romney has embraced more conservative positions on issues.

"The question is, you know, what's the sincerity of the move and whether he can be trusted," said Santorum.

Bachmann said it was too soon to declare anyone a true front-runner because the dynamic in the race was constantly changing.

"We've got 30 days," she said. "That's an eternity in this race."

Reince Priebus, the Republican Party chairman, said Sunday that he was indifferent to Cain's departure and that it was "only natural" in the face of falling poll numbers and trouble raising money.

This week's agenda for the primary candidates included a stop in Arizona by Romney and a forum Wednesday by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington, which is expected to attract Bachmann, Gingrich, Huntsman, Perry, Romney and Santorum. Gingrich was scheduled to meet Monday with real-estate mogul Donald Trump at Trump's New York offices. Trump, who briefly entered the primary race in the spring and drew considerable publicity when he questioned the validity of Obama's birth certificate, said he would moderate a Republican presidential debate in Iowa on Dec. 27.

Paul, who has clashed publicly with Trump, said he thought the GOP was making a mistake in giving Trump so much credibility.

"I don't understand the marching to his office. I mean I didn't know that he had an ability to lay on hands, you know, and anoint people," Paul said.

Paul and Bachmann spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Santorum spoke on ABC's "This Week." Priebus spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) ? The top U.N. climate official said Saturday she is confident industrial countries will renew their pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions after their current commitments expire next year.

Further commitments under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, an unshakable demand by poor countries, would avert a feared derailment of U.N. negotiations, but would mark little advancement toward the goal of a rapid and steep drop in worldwide carbon emissions blamed for climate change.

The protocol's future has been in doubt because rich countries have conditioned its continuation on an agreement by nations such as China, India, Brazil and South Africa to also accept binding emissions targets for themselves in the future.

"Countries are here these two weeks exactly talking about how they are going to go into a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol," U.N. official Christiana Figueres told The Associated Press.

"The discussion this week is not about the 'if,' it's about the 'how.' That doesn't mean that we are out of the thick of it," she said. Delegates are discussing participation, the legal form of the rules and all of the conditions that will define the second commitment period, she said.

Figueres, who is executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, spoke to AP to mark the halfway point of the two-week meeting in South Africa's eastern city of Durban.

Conference chairmen were also compiling the first draft of an agreement that will be given to government ministers arriving next week for the final four days of talks. Among them are 12 heads of state or government and ministers from more than 130 nations.

Outside the conference hall, several thousand activists, South African village women, and trade union members paraded through this port city for a march billed as a "global day of protest."

"It's all about our future. It's calling for a sustainable future. We've got to act and we've actually got to act urgently, so that we put this planet back onto a sustainable path," said Bishop Jeff Davies, Southern African Faith Communities Environment Institute. "At the moment, we are destroying our very life support systems."

Figueres said that talks were in "good shape" in preparation for the more senior delegates.

One reason for an uptick in optimism may be a signal from China that it will in the future set absolute caps on its emissions, perhaps as early as 2020. Until now, China has spoken of emissions controls purely in terms of energy intensity, or the amount of energy it uses per unit of economic production.

The signal from Beijing came from Xu Huaqing, a senior researcher for China's Energy Research Institute, who was quoted Friday in the semiofficial China Daily. His remarks were confirmed privately by one of China's top climate negotiators, Su Wei, on the sidelines of the talks in South Africa.

China is the world's largest emitter of heat-trapping greenhouse gas and a main foil of industrial countries in the U.N. negotiations. Virtually every statement, even semiofficial comments, is parsed by delegates seeking departures from its public positions.

"It's part and parcel of a growing realization that all countries can contribute to the solution, that every one of them has to do it, of course, according to their respective capabilities," Figures said.

The 27 members of the European Union provide the bulk of those countries falling under Kyoto's targets. In return for signing up to another round of pledges, the EU wants all major polluters to agree to a legally binding regime for everyone to be negotiated by 2015.

The United States refused to join the Kyoto regime, which it said unfairly exempted major developing countries from any emissions constraints.

Facebook Gowalla Acquisition: Facebook Reportedly Acquires Location-Based Startup Gowalla

Facebook has reportedly acquired location-based social service Gowalla, an unnamed source close to the company told CNN Money on Friday evening.

When asked for comment, a Facebook spokesperson wrote, "We don't comment on rumors and speculation." A Gowalla rep was not immediately available.

Gowalla in September announced that it had redesigned its mobile app and planned to shift focus away from "check-ins" and toward user-generated place recommendations.

"We wanted to go back to our passion, which is inspiring people to visit new places and visit the world through the eyes of someone they trust," Gowalla CEO Josh Williams told The Huffington Post's Bianca Bosker in September. "I think the check-in industry is going to be doing interesting things around loyalty rewards and daily deals, but that's something entirely separate from what we're trying to solve."

Gowalla, currently based in Austin, Texas, has faced steep competition from mobile check-in service Foursquare, which launched alongside Gowalla in 2009 at Austin's SXSW conference, as well as from daily deals giant Groupon and relative newcomer Google Offers.

In August 2010, Facebook debuted Places, its own location-based deals feature. The feature failed to take off, and almost exactly a year later, the social announced plans to kill off the project.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, during an interview on Wednesday with Business Insider Editor-in-Chief Henry Blodget, shed some light on the axing of Places. According to a live tweet from Business Insider's Silicon Valley Insider feed, Sandberg said the following about Places: "We put i tout there [sic]. It didn't get pickup. We're ruthless. We took it back."

CNN Money reports that the bulk of Gowalla's talent will move to Facebook HQ in Palo Alto. "The team will work on Facebook's Timeline feature, which launched at this year's F8 conference and is gradually rolling out to Facebook's 800 million members," writes CNN Money. (The Timeline is a revamped profile view that places emphasis on media content.)

The acquisition of Gowalla would fill a gap in Facebook's services that the social network has neen unable to close on its own.

TechCrunch points out that "it would make perfect sense for Facebook to start featuring location checkins and photos tagged with GPS coordinates into Timeline stories."
